Never Standard: your clothes are your best argument

Some things complete a look. And then there are those after which there is simply nothing left to add.

Not because they are louder than everything else. And not because they have to be complicated, strange, or provocative.

Sometimes the piece has already said everything.

You can stay quiet.

Everyday life is far too valuable to waste on the ordinary.

Especially when we already spend half our lives in clothes chosen somewhere between coffee and the front door.

A good piece does not have to save the day. But it can certainly make it feel less repetitive.

Sometimes all it takes is a colour you would not usually choose. Sometimes texture. Sometimes an unfamiliar volume. Sometimes nothing obvious at all.

You just look at it and know: yes, this.

It is not about “standing out”. It is about “finding your people”.

Because the whole idea of standing out assumes there is some correct mass of people around you that you are supposed to heroically distinguish yourself from.

That is giving the crowd far too much credit.

It is much more interesting to wear something that suits you so well that the question “but is it fashionable?” starts to feel irrelevant.

Someone will walk past. Someone will look twice. Someone will ask where you got it. And someone will understand immediately.

Perfectly normal natural selection.

Never Standard is not about universality. A piece does not have to work for everyone.

It can be asymmetric. Very bright. Almost invisible. As strange as you like. Or simply impossible to describe as “basic” with a straight face.

And that is fine.

Clothes do not have to be easy for everyone else to process.

You are the one who has to live in them comfortably.

Comfort does not have to be boring either.

A comfortable piece does not have to look as though its only purpose is to stay indoors.

You can wear volume, texture, an unusual cut, colour, and still spend the whole day in it without waiting for the moment you can finally take it off.

That is already a pretty good argument in favour of clothing.

The best accessory to a good look is a slight sense of confusion from everyone else.

Not shock. Not theatre. Not an attempt to prove you are the bravest person within a three-block radius.

Just that brief pause in someone’s gaze.

The one where they have not yet decided whether they like it, but they have already looked twice.

That is quite enough.

Never Standard is about clothes that do not try to turn you into someone else.

You can manage that perfectly well on your own.

Clothes only need to fit you well enough that explanations become unnecessary.

Verdict: if the piece has already said everything that needs saying, do not interrupt it.

And if someone looks slightly puzzled, perhaps there really is nothing left to add to the look.
