You have known how to look good for far too long to treat it with reverence.
The right colours, the right proportions, the right expression when someone explains for the third time what you understood before he even opened his mouth. You mastered all that years ago. Naturally, it has become a little boring.
Perfection has one serious flaw: use it too often and people begin to mistake it for your personality.
That is where a good mistake becomes useful.
Sand and dark chocolate together are almost indecently refined. It is a classic pairing, tested, trusted and entirely secure in its reputation. Then the lurex catches the light and puts the first small crack in all that exemplary good taste.
Fortunately, it does so beautifully.
The sleeves are different lengths, the asymmetry is obvious, and the wide collar can be shifted to reveal one shoulder. Sand and chocolate were clearly hinting at a quieter evening.
One bare shoulder, incidentally, has rarely ruined a career. It has rescued a few evenings.
Turn the jumper back to front and sand and chocolate take on different roles. Turn it inside out and the texture becomes more pronounced. Same piece, different impression.
A good mistake, it turns out, can have several excellent editions.
And perhaps that is its finest quality. It does not spoil perfection. It saves it from boredom.
